That should be enough to get them going automatically, so try to match their jobs with existing skill where possible. Having said that, villagers are often born with just a little skill in one of Researching, Building or Farming. On the character information screen, you can select the option next to the skill you want them to work on, but just doing that usually won’t do anything until you manually get them started. Keep trying and eventually they’ll get better. When setting a villager to a task, they will likely fail few times (it’s random). The more skilled a villager is, the more likely they are to succeed (there aren’t any negative outcomes if they fail nothing happens). Skills move from “Untrained” to “Adept” and up to “Master”.
